I empowered my team but they completely failed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was because I didn’t understand one thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s an example of what I missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One guy had 20 years experience and 3 years with the company. He really knew how we worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he failed miserably on a project despite his “experience” since he had never done that thing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It happened all over my first company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People felt unsupported and micro-managed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I learned a concept that completely transformed the way I lead:
\u21b3 Task Relevant Maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I learned it from the CEO of Intel and author of High Output Management Andy Grove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So what is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s a way of managing based on task-specific experience. Not seniority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So regardless of whether the person is:
\u2192 C-level
\u2192 Middle manager
\u2192 Or a brand new hire<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You manage them based on their skill level for the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And there\u2019s a few levels to it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Level 1 – Inexperienced
\u21b3 Doing it with them and coaching during the process<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Level 2 – Some experience
\u21b3 They do it but you supervise closely and check in regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Level 3 – Experienced
\u21b3 You give the broad objective. They do the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now you can coach and support where needed and avoid micromanaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This completely leveled up my leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And my teams have been grateful ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
